They swim, groom their wings with their beaks, eat, and sleep.
The penguins enjoy dining on fish (anything that is the right size), and krill (that is used as fishing bait). They are fed Japanese sand lance at Otaru Aquarium.
On their bellies, or they can even sleep standing up.
While penguins are birds, they aren’t able to fly. They are birds specialized in swimming. They have strong bones and muscles to overcome water pressure. The gentoo penguin is the fastest of the 18 kinds, with a top speed of 36kmph (a speed of 100m in 10 seconds).
Penguins basically live in pairs. They make nests in the breeding season.The materials used to make the nest include stones, branches, and leaves. Around April and May in Otaru Aquarium.
After the egg is laid, the parents spend approximately 36 days taking turns keeping the egg warm.The parents even care for their chick with constant accompaniment for about three months after hatching. The young bird grows to the adult size two months after birth. In Otaru Aquarium, eggs often hatch around June.
The islands surrounding Antarctica.They are a variety inhabiting a cold place, so they don’t like the heat. In captivity they require air conditioning in the summertime.
Once a year gentoo penguins molt, replacing all of their feathers.The feathers are replaced between 2 weeks to a month. Penguin feathers are waterproof, and molting is necessary to maintain their waterproofness. Molting consumes the physical strength of penguins, and puts their life in danger. Molting occurs around August and September in Otaru Aquarium.
