There is a railroad that circles around the Central Hokkaido area. From Sapporo Station, Otaru – Yoichi – Niseko – Oshamanbe (Hakodate Main Line). On the other side is Shin-Sapporo – Kitahiroshima – Chitose (airport) – Tomakomai – Shiraoi – Noboribetsu – Muroran – Lake Toya – Oshamanbe (Chitose and Muroran Main Lines). There are two National Parks in this area. There is one Geopark. It is a complex area of nature, history, Ainu culture, and modern urban development.

Yoichi - Shakotan Area

This is the Niseko Shakotan Otaru Kaigan National Park area. The coastline is lined with strange rocks and many tunnels. The inland area is an undeveloped (unspoiled) chain of mountains. At the tip of the range is the popular Cape Kamui. The Nikka Whisky Yoichi Distillery offers tours, tastings, and shopping. Yoichi is also home to many famous wineries.

The Yoichi Space Museum features a space telescope, a 3D theater, and exhibits of the clothing, food, and living quarters used in space.

Rosoku-iwa

It is a uninhabited island in the east of Shakotan Peninsula. A rock overlapping the sunset resembles a candle.

Cape Kamui

The tip of the Shakotan Peninsula. Cape Kamui is said to have a tragic love story. It takes about 20 minutes on foot from the parking lot to the tip.

There are many hot spring outlets and fumaroles in the back of the hot spring town, and the appearance of these boiling cauldrons has been described as “Jigokudani” (Hell Valley). The National Museum of the Ainu People is located in Shiraoi-cho.
