Sapporo is an attractive city throughout the four seasons. Sapporo is the center of the culture of Hokkaido. The city was first cultivated from the corner of a massive Ishikari Plain in the Meiji era and now the modern cityscape is beautifully aligned. Sapporo is the fifth biggest city in Japan, yet filled with rich nature and is considered "a Northern Paradise". It is the city of "food" where all the fresh ingredients gather from all over Hokkaido, the city of "romance" which passes on the beautiful culture left by Ainu people and the city of "blessing" which has high quality meltwater to moisten the lands, and it is the city of "hospitality", where people are warm hearted.
You can make new discoveries anytime you visit Sapporo. You can find tourist spots like "Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill" which allow tourists to enjoy the vastness of nature while staying in the big city, fresh seafood, varieties of sweets made from Hokkaido's dairy products produced by Hokkaido's rich nature and hot spring spots with an ample supply of water. 【Origin of the word “Sapporo”】
The leading theory is that it derivers from the Ainu (indigenous people of Japan) words “Sap (Dry) – Poro (Wide),” but another theory is that it derivers from “Sari (Wetland) -Poro (Wide) -Pe (River)” which describes the downstream basin of the Toyohira River.
【Introduction】The four seasons have clear differences. Spring arrives from April to June.
It is the season for cherry blossoms. July and August is the short summer in Hokkaido. It gets hot during daytime but it has refreshing temperature in the morning and night, a very comfortable season to spend. In October, the autumn arrives and it reaches nearly 0 degrees on some days.
The color of the mountains suddenly change to spectacular autumn leaves. December is the beginning of the long winter which creates a beautiful scenery with white snow.
