It is also famous for the last battle of the Meiji government that took place at Goryokaku. The area is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring.

Hakodate city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan.
Some people say the night view from Mt. Hakodate is the most beautiful in the world, and historical western-influenced buildings create an exotic atmosphere in Motomachi area where you can enjoy the sceneries in the end of Edo period and Meiji era (in the latter half of the 19th century).
In addition, you will find and feel the grandeur of Hokkaido in Goryokaku Park where was the last battlefield of Japanese civil war between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the new government force, and is now famous for cherry blossom viewing in spring.
