Lake Kussharo Lake Mashu

Lake Kussharo / Lake Mashu

The nation's largest caldera lake, the autumn scenery of the Ainu village, and a sea of clouds

In the Ainu language, "Kutcharo" means the exit of a lake or swamp. It's interesting because Lake Kussharo offers a variety of views of Hokkaido. Generally speaking, the most popular tourist attractions in the area are the acidic Kawayu Onsen, Mount Io, Sunayu (sand bath) and Lake Mashu. These are the famous scenic spots that are recognized by everyone.

On the other hand, there are Ainu houses and activities around Kotan from Wakoto Peninsula to Lake Kussharo.
Please check out Wakoto Peninsula walking MAP. Although Lake Kussharo has a mid-winter Omiwatari (ice sheets colliding and rising up in shards), ① from Kotan, the area around ③ the open-air baths in Wakoto Peninsula does not freeze even in winter here. Swans also come in search of food. There is ② the Kushiro river with flowing water. There are places with high geothermal heat, such as Kotan Onsen Hot Spring (map number 4273), the Ainu Folk Museum (map number 4283) the surrounding forest, and (6) the Bokke (erupting steam and muddy water) "Oyakotsu Jigoku" jutting out from Wakoto Peninsula (map number 4278). All of these places are beautiful during the fall color season.

Additionally, there is ⑤ the Bihoro Pass Observatory (Map No. 4151), ⑥ the Tsubetsu Pass Observatory (Map No. 4141), and the 3 MT. Mokoto observation points, all of which look out over Lake Kussharo, and are said to have the highest incidence of cloud sea in Hokkaido. When the sea of clouds above the lake becomes faint, you can see the island and the surface of the lake, and the autumn leaves and sea of clouds reflected in the lake are a magnificent view only available here. And the Ainu kotan powerfully lives on. Here, a walk through the autumn foliage is very special.
Best time to view the autumn leaves:Early October-Mid October
