Enjoy Spectacular Views of Autumn Leaves at Four Spots in Shiretoko

Here we introduce you to some of the autumn foliage spots in Shiretoko. The entire peninsula of Shiretoko Peninsula is covered in autumn foliage, but there are four spots in particular that are spectacular and worth seeing.
The conditions for the breathtaking beauty of Hokkaido's autumn foliage are 1) blue autumn sky and 2) sunshine. Shiretoko's autumn foliage offers a wide range of colors: the red of maple and Japanese rowans, the yellow of birch and Erman's birch, the green of coniferous trees, the white trunks of Japanese dwarf pine trees, the blue sky and the shadows.
Please check out Shiretoko Peninsula walking MAP. First of all, You should take a walk to see autumnal foliage of the five lakes of the Shiretoko peninsula. Stop by at the field house (Map No. 4096) of the five lakes and walk along the elevated wooden walkway (a safe place with high footholds). The foliage scenery around the first lake and reflected on the surface of the water is world famous.
The next stop is the Shiretoko Horobetsu walk. There are three forest "bathing" trails starting at the Shiretoko Nature Center (4092).
Then there is a trekking course from the Lake Rausu entrance to Lake Rausu (4538). From the first lake to the fifth lake, you arrive at Lake Rausu, your destination. It is approximately a 6km round trip and takes 3 hours to complete.
Lastly, are the autumn leaves and scenery in the Rausu area. Starting at the Rausu Visitor Centre (4531), the route from Kumanoyu Onsen (4535) to Kumagoeno Waterfall is beautiful. When you come to Rausu, why not visit Shiokaze Park (4540) and look at the monument to the famous Japanese poem "Shiretoko Ryojou" while enjoying the view of "Kunashiri Island"?
Shiretoko's beautiful nature is also famous as a habitat for brown bears. They roam around during the time of year when their bodies are hoarding food before hibernation. It's a good idea to wear a bell to repel bears as a minimum safety precaution, and to walk around in a group while talking cheerfully. Never leave uneaten food on the ground.
Best time to view the autumn leaves:Late September-Mid October
