Autumn leaves in the whole area around Lake Shikotsu are magnificent, and the autumn leaves on the road connects to the lakeside such as along Eniwa Dake Pass from Makomanai in the sounth ward, trails from Chitose Station and trails along Bifue Pass are breathtaking.
After arriving at the lakeside, it's time for "Autumn Leaves Walk". Please check out Lake shikotsu walking MAP. Let us introduces you to a course which takes about 2.5km and 40 minutes starting from the Lake Shikotsu Visitor Center.
Passing through ① the Mountain line iron bridge over the Chitose River, you will go toward the Kyukamura Shikotsuko which is also called the Wild Birds' Forest. This is a forest for bird-watching lovers, and if you listen carefully, you can hear several species of wild birds such as Red-Breasted Woodpeckers, Orioles and Great Titmice among the autumn leaves. Return to the Onsen Street and stroll along the lake.
Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake with low plankton production and high clarity (17.5m), the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan and famous for the freshwater trout (Oncorhynchus masou) imported from Lake Akan. It is part of Shikotsu Toya National Park. The "Hyotou Festival" held during the winter is popular.
